New STEM Designation CIP Codes
The updated list of STEM-designated degree programs was released on July 12th. The Department of Homeland Security STEM Designation CIP codes identify programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, essential for benefits like the 24-month STEM OPT extension for F-1 visa students. These codes are maintained by the NCES for tracking fields of study and program completions. Recent updates reflect evolving industry and academic landscapes, ensuring the list stays relevant.
Academic Administrator Training (AAT) is returning for 2024-25. AAT is intended to provide assistant/associate deans, C/Ds, and others with information on campus policies, processes, and resources available to support academic leadership. The sessions use case-based scenarios to facilitate active learning and problem solving, and focus on both increasing policy and process knowledge as well as skill development. The series is intended for department chairs, school directors, assistant/associate deans, and others in academic leadership roles. Questions? Contact Candice Batton.
Faculty Development Fellowships
Information on the 2025-26 FDF application process will be shared with the colleges in early August. FDF recommendations due to Academic Affairs by October 11, 2024.
Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Guidelines
The 2024-25 RPT process kicks off soon for many departments. A friendly reminder that RPT guidelines in place on August 31st remain in effect for the coming academic year. The colleges are asked to ensure that units affirm or revise RPT guidelines by August 31st through a vote of the faculty. Current guidelines for each unit should be sent electronically to Jennifer Swartzendruber in Academic Affairs by September 15th.
Important Dates
Aug 19: New Faculty Welcome Picnic - deans and C/Ds with new faculty are invited to attend the new faculty welcome picnic at 5:15 at Thompson Alumni Center.

Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships (ONSF)
ONSF expects a busy fall semester as high-achieving rising seniors can enter national awards competitions, whether they want to travel abroad to research or teach English with Fulbright or enter prestigious graduate school abroad funding opportunities such as the Marshall or the Rhodes. There are also opportunities for graduate school funding in the U.S. with Pickering and Rangel awards tied to foreign service commitments. Help with application navigation and statements is available.
👉Please encourage your faculty to reach out to their best students and encourage them to apply (so many Mavs just need that faculty push to believe in themselves)—and email ONSF with questions.
Office of Engagement Social Media Changes
The OE currently has two units with a social media presence, including the UNO Service Learning Academy and Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center. On August 5, we are making some changes to streamline posts from all our units – this will continue to include information about service learning and the CEC. We will send an announcement out the week of August 5 with direct links to our channels.

Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center
After the Storm: Identity and Repair Opens August 23
After the Storm: Identity and Repair explores how Samuel Bak reconceived Jewish identity after the Holocaust (1941-1945) through a set of guiding principles. He has stated that he had no notion to the scale of the disaster he survived as a child until the 1960s. Through his friendships and conversations with other survivors, he created in his art a world after disaster that mourns the undeniable loss of millions yet attempts to mend itself through the act of Tikkun, or repair. Tikkun proposes that people are responsible for the welfare of society and should commit to its reconstruction through acts of social justice, civic responsibility, and ethical behavior. In the works on display, Bak questions the presence of the divine in a world bent on destruction, yet the paintings also represent his hope for peace and his unrelenting faith in humanity’s capacity for goodness and empathy.
Exhibition opens Friday, August 23.
