Why Make Event Pages Accessible?
Localist by Concept3D (also known as the UNO Events Calendar), is the university’s primary platform for promoting events to students, faculty, staff, and the public. Accessible event pages improve usability for all users, including those using mobile devices, screen readers, or other assistive technologies.
How to Create Accessible Event Pages in Localist
Follow these tips to make your event pages clear and accessible.
1. Use text styles and formatting correctly.
For administrators, Localist offers "Styles" (normal, bigger, biggest) and basic formatting tools (bold, underline, and italics) for formatting event descriptions.
For users without publishing access, Localist offers only basic formatting tools for formatting event descriptions.
Use these options intentionally to create clear structure and hierarchy in your content. Avoid using italics as italicized text can be difficult to read, and use bold in lieu of an underline to prevent confusion that the text is a link.
2. Write short paragraphs and add space between them.
Write in short paragraphs. After each paragraph, press Enter (or Return) twice to create a full blank line before the next paragraph. This spacing improves readability, especially on mobile devices.
3. Write all essential information as text.
Include key details such as date, time, location, cost, and registration directly in the event description and designated fields. Do not rely on images to convey essential information.
4. Make your image accessible.
Upload a rectangular image with ideal dimensions of 947 × 557 pixels (or larger). Choose an image that works well when automatically cropped into different shapes and sizes, including square formats. Avoid images with text when possible (especially near the edges) since cropping can cut off or distort text. Always add alt text ("photo description" in Localist) to describe the image.
5. Use links and fields thoughtfully.
Use clear, descriptive link text (avoid “Click here”). Complete all relevant fields, including contact name and email, so users know who to reach with questions.
