ACCESSIBILITY TOPIC: SOCIAL MEDIA

If you manage an account representing UNO, please follow the guidelines below to ensure ADA Title II guidelines are met. If you do not, please share this email with the person who manages your social media account.

Why Make Social Media Content Accessible?

Creating accessible social media content helps ensure every member of our community can engage with the information we share. As a public institution, we’re also responsible for meeting accessibility requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires our digital communications—including social media posts—to be accessible to people with disabilities.

Guidelines for Posting on Social Media

  • Avoid posting graphics with text. Not only are posts more engaging when they emphasize people and campus, but your content will be more accessible.
  • Include subtitles on all videos that include talking. This can be done on apps, like Edits and CapCut. If uploading on YouTube, be sure to include automatic subtitles and be sure to edit any misspelled names. Including subtitles is also good for all audiences, as users tend to watch videos without sound. Make a full transcript of the video available – YuJa offers this capability. You can also upload a video to ChatGPT and ask to create a full transcript.
  • Include alt text on posts. Facebook includes them automatically and is generally accurate. On Instagram (IG) and LinkedIn, you can include alt text by editing the post after publishing.
  • For IG stories, be mindful about color contrast of any text you include. White font with a black background or vice versa is recommended
