Join us for the final Meet a Bak Lunch and Learn of 2023 on December 13 from 12 – 1 PM in the Museum’s classroom.
Dedicated to the powerful art of Samuel Bak, we offer exhibitions, educational programs, and events such as lectures, roundtable discussions, and K-12 school field trips to encourage meaningful conversations on art, human rights, Holocaust education, and genocide.
For a museum as unique as ours, we’re looking to supporters who care deeply about the lessons Samuel Bak’s artwork carries, and a safe, shared space to learn about past persecutions, modern inequities, and the hope for a more peaceful future.
Consider a year-end gift today and make a meaningful difference in supporting Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center and expanding our critical work in our community.
Becoming a Witness: From Abstraction to Figuration
Becoming a Witness: From Abstraction to Figuration, which opens on January 24, 2024, will explore Samuel Bak’s new approach to painting post-1960s. Bak uses bright colors and hyperrealist details to draw the viewer in, who is then confronted with Bak’s memories of the Holocaust, themes of war and peace, and the struggle of the survivor in the aftermath of the destruction.
SBMLC will be closed from December 23, 2023 through January 23, 2024 for the University Holiday Shutdown and the exhibition deinstallation and reinstallation.
Thank you to all who contributed to SBMLC during UNO’s Wear Black Give Back campaign on November 8 and 9! We not only met our two challenge goals but exceeded them. Through the support of 77 donors, the Museum received $15,859. Each donation we receive is crucial to help the Museum and our staff facilitate important conversations relevant to current events happening in our world today through art.
SMBLC is partnering with the Institute for Holocaust Education (IHE) this school year to host IHE’s Searching for Humanity field trips. The Searching for Humanity: Veterans, Victims and Survivors of World War II program tells a powerful story about the Holocaust and those who rescued survivors from Concentration camps. Told via photographs, memorabilia and testimony of Nebraska Holocaust survivors and servicemen, the program and exhibit grapples with the search for humanity during the Holocaust.
A new biography, Art and Life: The Story of Samuel Bak, by Ute Ben Yosef is available for purchase from Pucker Gallery. This book is 360 pages long and has approximately 265 illustrations.
