December is an opportune time to let students know:
That if they enjoyed your class, they might also enjoy other classes you are teaching or that are in your discipline. Help them identify courses that feed their curiosity.
You look forward to seeing them on campus in 2024.
UNO wants them to return and continue their journey toward graduation.
It's not too late. Keep your students engaged with these suggestions for prep week. If there is a final project at the end of your course, take time to review the expectations and grading criteria. Have students engage with each other by doing peer reviews. To help students give better quality feedback, structure the peer-review process by having them use a rubric or checklist. As a bonus, a good peer-review process may even make grading a little less daunting for you.
If you are giving an exam, preview the format by sharing the number and type of questions. Consider using class time or creating a Canvas module to share several sample questions. This will re-engage students with content from earlier in the semester. It may also reduce anxiety leading up to the exam.
Despite your best efforts, some students may not pass your course. You can support them by:
Encouraging them to meet with an advisor to figure out their next best step.
Letting them know that failing one class does not equate to failing college.
Helping them focus on what they have learned by identifying content and skills they have mastered.
