Monday many people in Omaha celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A day that marks 36 years of celebration to honor a civil rights activist and leader.

In North Omaha a group of teens from Goodwill Omaha’s Youthbuild joined in a community service project with Culxr House. Culxr house is an artistic space for artist, creators and entrepreneurs.

Youthbuild is an organization to help disadvantaged or at risk youth to live better lives. It provides them a place to start a career and helps them lead their lives in a better direction.

Community service is a big part of the program and the youth who helped today helped themselves and Culxr House.

Those in the Youthbuild organization started building a multiuse wall in the back of the Culxr house building.

“Community service work now it shares a common element in that it’s young people playing a critical roll in what hopefully will be a positive future outlook for their community," said Dr. Imani.

Dr. Nikitah Imani professor of black studies at UNO said MLK day is a day to show respect and provide community service and he says today shouldn’t be the only day work is done in the community.

“King day is important but I would argue the king legacy is more important and it is important all the time.”

Youthbuild Americorps received a grant to build the multiuse wall and it is expected to be completed by Friday.
