Housing experts plan to reinvest in red-lined areas of Omaha.
Front Porch Investments organizes funds to address housing needs. It plans to launch the Greenlining Fund next spring to enhance homeownership.
"It's another set of funding resources that will go to help specific folks in the Omaha area," spokesperson Naomi Hattaway said.
The Greenlining Fund will re-invest and prevent future displacement of residents. A committee will steer the effort, driven in part by people who lived or live in redlined areas.
"The Community Advisory Committee will hold an equal vote to our board of directors and to our staff for decision making," Hattaway said. "That was also important that we share that power equitably."
UNO Black Studies doctor Terri Crawford addresses redlining, saying Omaha has pockets of poverty that exist today as a result of redlining in the past.
"There's substantial funding that will be available in this community, so it provides an opportunity for us to walk the walk," Crawford said.
Front Porch is recruiting for the Greenlining Fund's Community Advisory Committee, which is launching the application process in the next week — according to Hattaway.
