Housing experts plan to reinvest in redlined areas of Omaha

AT SIX, HOUSING EXPERTS LOOK TO THE PAST TO FIX HOUSING PROBLEMS OF THE PRESENT. GOOD EVENING. I’M JULIE CORNELL. I’M BILL SCHUBERT. ROB IS OFF TONIGHT. FRONT PORCH INVESTMENTS WANTS TO REINVEST IN AREAS OF OMAHA THAT HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY REDLINING. THE PRACTICE DEEMED PREDOMINANTLY BLACK AND MINORITY NEIGHBORHOODS AS UNFIT OR HIGH RISK. IT’S ALL MORTGAGE LENDERS REFUSING LOANS, DENIED SERVICES OR PRACTICING OTHER DISCRIMINATORY TORY BEHAVIOR. IT WAS MADE ILLEGAL IN 1968, BUT HOUSING EXPERTS SAY ITS IMPACTS ARE STILL BEING FELT TODAY. KETV NEWSWATCH 7 ALEX MCLOON EXPLAINS HOW THE GREEN LINING FUND HOPES TO CHANGE THAT. HE JOINS US LIVE TONIGHT. YEAH, IT’S ANOTHER RESOURCE TO ENHANCE HOMEOWNERSHIP, WHICH WILL LIKELY FOCUS ON NORTH AND SOUTH OMAHA. YOU KNOW, BLACK STUDIES, DR. TERRY CRAWFORD ADDRESSES REDLINING. WE HAVE POCKETS OF POVERTY THAT EXIST NOW, TODAY. AS A RESULT OF REDLINING. THIS EXHIBIT EXPLAINS HOW REDLINING CUT ACROSS OMAHA DEVASTATING AND DISINVESTING STREET CORNERS AND COMMUNITIES. IT ALSO DESCRIBES HOW TO UN DESIGN THE DAMAGE. JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WE HAVE WHAT’S CALLED OUR GREEN LANTERN CONFERENCE, AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP GENERATIONS OF HOMEOWNERS WITH FRONT PORCH INVESTMENTS. IT’S ANOTHER SET OF FUNDING RESOURCES THAT WILL GO TO HELP SPECIFIC FOLKS IN THE OMAHA AREA. FRONT PORCH IS ORGANIZING THE EFFORT TO REVERSE REDLINING THROUGH THE GREEN LINING FUND, WHICH WILL BE STEERED IN PART BY PEOPLE WHO LIVED OR LIVE IN RED LINED AREAS TO FORM A COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE. THE COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL HOLD AN EQUAL VOTE TO OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND TO OUR STAFF FOR DECISION MAKING. AND SO THAT WAS ALSO IMPORTANT THAT WE SHARE THAT POWER EQUITABLY. THE GREEN LINING FUND WILL REINVEST AND PREVENT FUTURE DISPLACEMENT OF RESIDENTS WHEN THE EFFORT LAUNCHES NEXT YEAR. WHAT I CAN SAY IS POSSIBLE IS THINGS LIKE ZERO INTEREST HOME EQUITY LOANS FOR FOLKS TO DO HOME REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS. IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE ANTIBODIES, REPLACEMENT SOLUTIONS LIKE PROPERTY TAX RELIEF. IS THERE SUBSTANTIAL FUNDING THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THIS COMMUNITY? SO IT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO WALK THE WALK. FRONT PORCH SAYS IT’S LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROCESS NEXT WEEK. THAT’S HOW YOU CAN BE A PART OF THIS COMMITTEE, WHICH WILL TRAIN OVER THE WINTER WITH FRONT PORCH AND THEN LAUNCH NEXT SPRING. LIVE IN SOUTH OMAHA ALEX MCLOON. KETV NEWSWATCH 7. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU, ALEX. AND THE CITY OF OMAHA IS ALSO CREATING A PLAN TO ADDRESS HOUSING PROBLEMS, BUT TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK. THE FINAL OFFICE HOURS FOR THE CITY’S HOUSING AFFORDABILITY ACTION PLAN ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW AT THE SOUTH OMAHA LIBRARY BRANCH. IT ENDS AT 630. YOU CAN NOW SEND AN EMAIL. EMAIL THOSE COMMENTS UNTIL FRIDAY. SEND THEM TO OMAHA. PLANNING AT CITY OF OMAHA, DAWG. THE CITY WANTS TO HEAR FROM RESIDENTS, DEVELOPERS, PARTNERS AND OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY. SOME AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS THEY’RE CONSIDERING ARE CHANGING ZONING ORDINANCES TO BUILD MORE AND
