Join a conversation with Dr. Alla Shapiro, MD, Ph.D., who will be discussing her experiences fleeing anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union and becoming a stateless person before resettling in the United States.  The presentation will be online Sunday, March 20th at 1:00 pm with the Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies, UNO.   Dr. Shapiro's memoir, "Doctor on Call: Chernobyl Responder, Jewish Refugee, Radiation Expert," was published by Mandel Vilar Press in April 2021 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear catrastrophe.

Dr. Alla Shapiro, M.D., Ph.D trained as pediatric hematologist in Kiev, Ukraine. She was one of the first physician responders to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and headed the field team surveying the medical effects on children in the Chernobyl vicinity.  After arriving in the United States, Dr. Shapiro relicensed in pediatric hematology-oncology and worked in the federal government.  She served as a Medical Officer as a member of the Counter-Terrorism and Emergency Coordination Staff, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), US Food and Drug Administration before retiring in 2019.

In May 2022, Dr. Shapiro will be visiting the University of Nebraska-Omaha to give a series of lectures on being a Chernobyl first responder, her radiation research, and her experiences as a Jewish refugee.
