Who doesn’t want to think about summer in February?!?

Remind students to schedule meetings with their advisors, clear holds, and get ready to enroll in summer courses. Early enrollment for summer, including summer intersession, begins in late February. When students take advantage of early enrollment, they have the widest selection of class options and are more likely to stay continuously enrolled.

Now that we’re several weeks into the semester, it is a great time to employ the Stop-Start-Continue technique. Ask your students:

  • What should I (the instructor) stop/start/continue doing that might help you succeed in this course?
  • What should you (the student) stop/start/continue doing that might help you succeed in this course?

The strategy solicits student feedback that can help you make teaching decisions for the remainder of the semester. It also prompts students to reflect on their responsibilities as learners. Learn more about this and other teaching strategies in Snafu Edu: Teaching and Learning When Things Go Wrong in the College Classroom, by Jessamyn Neuhaus.

Students are much more likely to seek help when faculty members:

    • Normalize getting assistance by sharing their own stories or those of past students.
    • Give a specific recommendation that students visit a support center well in advance of assignment deadlines and exam dates.
    • Remind students that they’ve paid for many services via their student fees, so they definitely should take advantage of them.

Encourage your students to connect to UNO’s academic support centers. Many have convenient locations on both campuses or offer online appointments.
