Types of Financial Aid

There are a variety of ways to make college affordable. These are the most common types of financial aid and how they're awarded.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to students based on merit and/or need and no repayment is required. UNO offers a wide range of scholarship programs for all types of students.

Grants

Grants are awarded to students who demonstrate high financial need based on the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) and no repayment is required.

Loans

Loans are funded by governments or private lenders and repayment is required. Federal loans have fixed interest rates, while private loans may have variable interest rates.

Work Study

Work study is a program that offers flexible employment opportunities for students with financial need to help pay for college related expenses.

In 2023-24, $23.3 million was awarded in institutional scholarships to undergraduate students.

40% of UNO students are Pell Grant eligible.

The Pell Grant is the largest federal grant program offered to undergraduate students who file a FAFSA.

DID YOU KNOW?

35% of UNO students are Nebraska Promise eligible.

Nebraska Promise is a tuition assistance program that covers undergraduate tuition for eligible applicants.

DID YOU KNOW?

Students in 11 states outside Nebraska are eligible for OUR Tuition.

Residents of Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin can attend UNO at a reduced rate.
