Why you may want to encourage faculty to attend writing retreats.

Faculty can feel enormous pressure to keep their publication trajectory on track and often move from one project to another without taking time to reflect on their writing process. Some faculty have found writing retreats a helpful means to meet their publication goals and reflect on their writing process, but there may be other benefits of writing retreats.

Ahern-Dodson & Dufour (2021) found writing retreat participants also became more interested in the writing experiences of their students. Faculty participants realized that they “…design classes that could be described as relentless—one assignment after another, without time to go back or to rest and reflect.” Furthermore, participants reflected that when they or students experience writing in this way, the meaning of writing – engaging with the content - can be lost as it is difficult to go beyond the “brute goal of completing the product.”

With this enhanced awareness of the student writing experience, faculty may be better equipped to foster more meaningful and sustainable writing expectations for students. If you have faculty interested in a writing retreat, consider recommending the following:

Spring Writing Sprint – NEW this year: March 18-20 (more details below)
