Last week the department moved into 4,096 sq. ft. of newly renovated space dedicated explicitly to physics, with 1,703 sq. ft. of refreshed research labs to support our students creating innovations in biophysics and materials physics. Our new classrooms will facilitate an evidence-based "studio physics" model shown to improve physics learning. We also have a new and larger study space for physics majors to accommodate our growing program and encourage collaboration.
The physics department leads the College of Arts and Sciences in external grants, having secured $3.4M this year alone with half of the fiscal year still remaining. Our majors are a key component of these projects, with greater than 20% of UNO physics graduates reporting participation in undergraduate research. That's nearly twice the rate of research participation compared to other majors in the college. We're trying to increase that number, so reach out to physics faculty to learn how you can start creating innovations of your own.
We're going to have a great semester! Keep reading to learn about opportunities and events coming up.

Come see our new physics "studio" classroom and chat with faculty. There's no formal program this week, but we'll have FREE pizza! We'll also talk about the new study space and opportunities in the department.
Opportunities
Student Worker Needed!
The physics department is hiring a student worker to help us with logistics this semester. We need help moving physics toys from storage and setting up new research labs. Apply today!
Becoming an APS Student Ambassador is a unique leadership opportunity for undergraduate students to join a network of physics students within their institutions, local community, and region.
What obstacles do instructors face in using evidence-based teaching practices in their classes? The chairs of Sociology/Anthropology and Physics teamed up with two graduate students to answer this research question. The resulting paper was just published. Learn how we're working to make UNO courses better for students.
