Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center (SBMLC) is pleased to present a free panel discussion about the reality of forced migration and resettlement in Nebraska in 2023.

Bak -- Public Opening 10 -- social

The panel will feature:

  • Dekow Sagar, Executive Director of the International Council for Refugees and Immigrants;
  • Kubra Haidari, Case Manager at Immigrant Legal Center/Refugee Empowerment Center (ILC/REC); and
  • Mohamed Sahil, Executive Director of Nebraska Afghan Community Center.

The conversation will be moderated by Lacey Studnika, Program Director at Habitat for Humanity Omaha who has over 20 years experience of fostering an inclusive and welcoming community for refugees in the United States through refugee resettlement.

 

Join us for the evening to view the Museum’s exhibition Flight and Hope and deepen our knowledge and understanding of forced migration and refugee topics.

Flight and Hope Lecture Series Continues on October 19

Join us for a free Exhibition Lecture Series that will explore various cases of forced migration. 

 

On Thursday, October 19 at 5:30 P.M., Dr. Danielle Battisti will address Jewish migration to the United States from Displace Persons Camps in the aftermath of World War II.

Join us for a series of poetry workshops. Sign up today to participate.

  • Dr. Todd Robinson's session will explore elegy, recovery, and survival. November 9, 2023, at 5:30 P.M.
  • Ms. Sharmila Seyyid's session will focus on writing and reading for recovery. November 16, 2023, at 5:30 P.M.
  • Dr. Lisa Fay Coutley's session will focus on trauma and healing in the context of domestic violence. November 30, 2023, at 5:30 P.M.
  • Dr. Robinson, Dr. Coutley, and Ms. Seyyid will participate in a public poetry reading. December 2, 2023, time TBD.

Meet a Bak Lunch and Learn Series

 

Join us for a discussion about an unseen painting by Samuel Bak that is part of our permanent collection.

 

Program is from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M in the Museum Classroom. Maximum capacity is 15 and RSVP is required.

 

Curator Talk

 

Join us for a 30-minute presentation led by Assistant Gallery Manger, Sadie Bartle, on the topic of "Aesthetics of Fascism."

 

Program is from 5:15 P.M. to 5:45 P.M in the Museum Classroom. Maximum capacity is 30 and RSVP is required.
