Summer 2023 marked the 25th summer the UNO campus has hosted Aim for the Stars, Omaha's premier science- and math-oriented summer camp for 3rd through 10th graders. Previously housed in the physics department, Aim for the Stars is now administered by the STEM TRAIL Center.
And through UNO's ONE STEM initiative, the Center has plans to aim even higher. Over the next year, they'll be expanding camp offerings, refreshing curriculum, and introducing need-based scholarships, so students from all backgrounds will have the opportunity to attend the week-long experiences.
"The STEM TRAIL Center is excited to serve as the new administrative home of Aim for the Stars," said Dr. Chris Moore, director of the Center. "Thanks to the ONE STEM community project, even more Omaha-area students will have the opportunity to visit UNO's campus and gain valuable competencies in science and math, providing those crucial first steps towards social mobility for which UNO has become famous. Aim for the Stars has been life-changing for many, and now will impact even more."
Just over 950 future Mavericks (58% male and 42% female) attended the approximately 40 camps, which were held over an eight-week period this summer. Check out some of their adventures in the photos below!
Just a walk on the moon! 4th and 5th graders explore lunar locations using latitude and longitude on a Giant Moon Map™ at the Astronomical Adventures astronomy camp.
And we have lift-off! Campers watch the launch of rockets they designed and built at Astronomical Adventures, an Aim for the Stars camp for 4th and 5th graders.
