Mavericks,
Innovation comes in many different forms.
Everywhere you look across our campus, Mavericks are transforming the way we teach, work, learn, and collaborate, and extend our university’s impact throughout the state.
Higher education finds itself at a pivotal moment in history where experts are predicting a dramatic decline in the number of college-age youth by 2025, artificial intelligence is challenging how we prepare our learners for the workforce, and the public is split on the value of a college degree.
The institutions who choose to innovate through these challenges will deliver an impactful education at a great value will improve the social mobility for everyone in the communities they serve. The University of Nebraska at Omaha is one of those institutions.
In this month’s newsletter you will see how we are upending the status quo to deliver an exceptional experience to every learner.

Expanding International Partnerships
Earlier this month I had the honor of joining Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen on a trade mission to Vietnam to build international relationships, bolstering opportunities for recruitment, study abroad, and collaboration between institutions. International relationships like this create a groundswell of innovation that will positively impact our community. It is our mission to bring the world to UNO, and the world to UNO.
Did you know that the price of textbooks have increased by 88% nationwide in the last decade? Finding new and creative ways to make an education more affordable is something we do every day at UNO. I am proud of the Division of Innovative and Learning-Centric Initiatives’ efforts that have saved UNO students $4 million in the Spring 2023 semester alone through the Open Nebraska initiative.
I truly believe the future of the tech industry isn’t on the coasts – its future is right here in Omaha, Nebraska. The College of Information Science & Technology is working to make this belief a reality and combating “brain drain” through its innovative Learn and Earn Initiative, where students receive valuable job shadowing, project, and paid internship experience.
