UNO International Programs: Gateway to the World
By Jody Neathery-Castro, Ph.D.
Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement
International Programs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha serves as UNO’s gateway to the world. International Programs manages a diverse set of projects and academic pursuits, from training teachers in Afghanistan to preparing all students for an interconnected world, partnered in trade and diplomacy, that demands collaborative solutions to global challenges. We house several connected units for the campus: International Recruitment and Partnerships, International Student Advising, Education Abroad, ILUNO Intensive English Programs, Global Grants, and the Center for Afghanistan Studies.
Our International Recruitment and Partnerships team has been working with partners across the globe to promote our university and its opportunities to potential students. While international student mobility dipped everywhere during the pandemic, student interest in going abroad is very high, and at UNO our international enrollments have been rebounding. Our goal is to have international students comprise 10% of the student body in the next few years. With an affordable price, international scholarships, strong programs of study, and a dynamic campus and city, UNO is a desirable destination for international students. We are ensuring that potential students across the globe know about all of the great opportunities at UNO.
The Center for Afghanistan Studies celebrated its 50th anniversary in April with a week of activities celebrating past accomplishments, current and ongoing projects, and analysis on future prospects. The Center offers cultural programs and trainings, faculty development and academic research to promote awareness about Afghanistan and the countries around Afghanistan that share similar rich cultural heritage, sociopolitical and economic interests, traits and values. Former US Ambassador to Afghanistan Ronald Neumann and UNO emeritus geology faculty and co-founder of the Center Jack Schroeder headlined the celebration. Other activities included a film screening and panel discussion on human rights for women in Afghanistan.
