As Maverick Flex Path moves from vision to implementation, UNO is building a shared infrastructure to support all CBE programs across campus. This ensures every program that launches through Maverick Flex Path shares a consistent structure, quality standard, and learner experience.
📌 All CBE programs at UNO will be designed, built, and delivered through the Maverick Flex Path model in coordination with the Center for Competencies, Skills, and Workforce Development (CCSW).

Curriculum Spotlight: How Is a CBE Program Organized?
As CBE course development begins this fall at UNO, one guiding question continues to shape our academic work: What makes a program truly “competency-based”?
In a recent article from the Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN), CBE expert Dr. Ryan Specht-Boardman outlines the foundations of CBE curriculum design—and why it looks fundamentally different from traditional program planning.
Key Takeaways:
Start with the program, not the course: Every decision is grounded in program-level competencies that reflect workforce needs.
Design backward: Begin with what learners need to do in the real world, then build assessments, activities, and content to support that.
Sequence with purpose: Competencies aren’t just grouped—they’re scaffolded to support progression, mastery, and transferability.
At UNO, faculty teams are applying these principles through Learning Journey Outlines, competency mapping, and alignment planning—all supported by our C-BEN partners and instructional design team. As course shell development ramps up this fall, this work is shaping a learner experience built for clarity, flexibility, and skill-building.
